General Telephone Company of Illinois
In 1953, the General Telephone Company of Illinois had 165,000 company-owned telephones in Illinois and operated 222 exchanges in the state. Its headquarters were located in Murphysboro. The company’s southern district operated 47 exchanges, serving more than 50,000 company-owned telephones. In order to provide service to its subscribers in the southern district, the company cleared the block between Union and Jefferson Streets and built a massive brick switching office. In order to make room for the new building, two homes were demolished.
By the end of the twentieth century, Illinois had five area codes. In 1959, Elgin was the first city in the United States to use touch-tone dialing. The company’s local service was priced at seven dollars per month. By the end of the 1980s, the company had more than one million customers.
In the early 1990s, Illinois Bell faced intense competition from rivals. It hoped to enter the long-distance market and cable television market, but federal and state regulators rejected its plan. Competition also appeared in the form of small independent telephone companies with fiber-optic loops in downtown Chicago. In 1996, rival cellular phone companies were partnering with cable companies in Chicago to offer residential telephone service through cable television wires.
In 1959, the General Telephone Company of Illinois merged with Sylvania Electric Products, creating the General Telephone & Electronics Corporation. GT&E went on to acquire several companies, including the Hawaiian Telephone Company and Northern Ohio Telephone Company. This increased the company’s capacity to serve ten million telephones.
